Gert Germeraad, Mansportret, 2002

Center of The Hague: Spui - Grote Markstraat - Kalvermarkt

Part of The Sculpture Gallery

The sculptures of Gert Germeraad (1959) are always about a portrait. He makes heads, busts and torsos of existing people. Often they are based on self-portraits by other artists. For this sculpture he chose the naked self-portrait of the Viennese artist Egon Schiele (1890-1918). Even though it is easy to recognize Schiele's skinny, boyish body, Germeraad's version is much more vulnerable and wary than the defiant and confrontational original.
