Carel Visser, Untitled, 1994

Center of The Hague: Spui - Grote Markstraat - Kalvermarkt

Part of The Sculpture Gallery

In Switzerland he once saw snow on a spruce tree. Carel Visser (1928) turned this image into a sculpture. But the sculpture only depicts the snow; he left out the tree. Visser made his snowy spruce from styrofoam. The channels that were used to cast the piece into bronze are just as visible as the structure of the styrofoam. With this work the doyen of Dutch sculpture shows us how structured nature can be.
