The Silicon Rally project
Silicon Rally offers the Stroom audience an introduction to the Internet
and the World Wide Web through both a selection of sites and the contributions
of artists and critics -- on site at its exhibition space in the Hague,
and online through its newly opened website.
Silicon Rally's two site specific parts consist of the setting up of 10
terminals for free public access in the installation at the exhibition space,
and the intervention in workshops, lectures and correspondencies by Internet
experts. They introduce their personal approach to the use of information
media to the benefit of contemporary cultural production.
The Internet's public sphere is more often than not imagined as yet another
extension of the existing public sphere and media. Its technological qualities
however make it terra incognita in almost every single aspect of
its use. Silicon Rally is an attempt to gather information and opinions
to gain insight in the discerning qualities of networked computer mediated
communication for cultural communities.

Jouke Kleerebezem is a dutch artist and curator. From 1979 through 1989
he was one of the founders and organizers of De Zaak Foundation, an alternative
space in Groningen the Netherlands. In 1992 he curated Allocations; Art
for a Natural and Artificial Environment at the occasion of the Floriade
Horticultural World Exposition and published the book with the same title.
In 1994 he co-organized the second Dors of Perception conference with Mediamatic
magazine and the Netherlands Design Institute. Current projects include
a contribution to the 'Art meets Science and Spirituality in a Changin Economy'
exhibition in Copenhagen this Summer, the 'Ketelmeer Sludge Deposit' Engines
and Agents project and the organization of the Zapscapes conference
on landscape architecture and new media this fall.

Silicon Rally presentatie
Met Silicon Rally biedt Stroom haar publiek ruim twee maanden de gelegenheid
om het Internet en het World Wide Web te onderzoeken, in een presentatie
naar concept en ontwerp van kunstenaar Jouke Kleerebezem.
Silicon Rally bestaat uit twee gedeelten: dagelijks openbare toegang tot
het Internet/WWW op tien computers, èn een programma van interventies
door Internet `routiniers', die vanuit verschillende achtergronden (beeldende
kunst, landschapsarchitectuur, sociaal-culturele disciplines, commercie)
hun persoonlijke gebruik van informatienetwerken in bondige spreekbeurten,
workshops en discussies introduceren.

Het Internet wordt in Silicon Rally door Stroom hcbk kritisch benaderd
als fenomeen dat tot nu toe - vooral dankzij het feit dat het een fenomenale
mediale aantrekkingskracht bezit - meer als een technologische dan als een
culturele verworvenheid wordt beschouwd. De `informatierevolutie' verandert
de voorwaarden waaronder we werken, ontspannen en communiceren echter fundamenteel.
Naast de presentatie van voor Stroom relevante Websites en nieuwsgroepen,
werd kunstenaars en critici verzocht als agent c.q. gids op te treden en
uit het rijke informatieaanbod van het Internet persoonlijke keuzes te bemiddelen
en zo aan de ontwikkeling van de site bij te dragen.

Silicon Rally presenteert het Internet/WWW op locatie in Stroom hcbk,
aan het Spui te Den Haag. Stroom hcbk beheert ter plaatse een tentoonstellingsruimte,
die zij wijdt aan `beeldende kunst in relatie tot stad en openbaarheid'.
De `openbaarheid' van computernetwerken wordt vaak naar analogie met de
architecturale (stedelijke) openbare ruimte voorgesteld en maakt dankbaar
gebruik van ruimtelijke metaforen. Voor alles belichaamt de over dit medium
gedistribueerde informatie echter een geheel nieuw `landschap', waarin oriëntatie,
navigatie en interactie van mens en informatie en de communicatie tussen
gebruikers ons voor opgaven stellen, die wezenlijk verschillen van die welke
de materiële werkelijkheid vraagt. Silicon Rally wil de informatiewerkelijkheid
van computernetwerken niet beperken tot de simulatie van een dagelijkse
werkelijkheid, maar haar als terra incognita beschouwen.
Vanuit de brede interesse van Stroom hcbk in beeldende kunst en openbare
ruimte, stimuleert de presentatie van ontwikkelingen op het Internet/WWW
het onderzoek naar de mogelijkheden voor de productie en presentatie van
kunst in de openbaarheid van nieuwe media.

Jouke Kleerebezem is beeldend kunstenaar en tentoonstellingsorganisator.
Van 1979 tot 1989 was hij een van de drie sleutelfiguren in stichting De
Zaak te Groningen. In 1992 organiseerde hij de internationale tentoonstelling
`Allocaties-kunst voor een natuurlijke en kunstmatige omgeving' op en ter
gelegenheid van de Floriade in Zoetermeer. In 1994 was hij mede-organisator
van de tweede `Doors of Perception' conferentie over interactieve media,
@Home.
