"Architecture is a very powerful, but very clumsy, form of communication between people who mostly don't know each other... There is always mistranslation. It is impossible to foresee everything, and sinister to try. But architects have to do something - they change things whether they want to or not. They can't pretend to be neutral. Stewart Brand said that all buildings are predictions of the future, and that predictions of the future are always wrong. I would put it differently. All buildings are propositions of what the future could be, which users can then modify and reinterpret. Good architects understand this."

Wat is de relatie tussen architectuur en erotiek, tussen macht en geld? Wat als architectuur zich liet leiden door de humanistische aspecten van onze levens en locaties, in plaats van dat ze gestuurd wordt door marketingstrategieën en architecturale heldhaftigheid? Dit is nu precies wat de Engelse architectuurcriticus Rowan Moore onderzoekt in zijn recente boek Why We Build en in zijn lezing bij Stroom. Voor diegenen die geleerd hebben dat de beste architectuur 'tijdloos' is, wees voorbereid op een lezing waarbij Moore stelt dat de eeuwigheidswaarde van architectuur zwaar overgewaardeerd wordt.

Rowan Moore werd als architect opgeleid aan Cambridge University, maar ging vervolgens de journalistiek in. Hij was redacteur van het architectuurtijdschrift Blueprint, en heeft artikelen geschreven voor de Evening Standard (London) en The Guardian. In 2002 volgde hij Lucy Musgrave op als directeur van de Architecture Foundation. In 2008 ging hij daar weer weg om zich volledig te wijden aan de journalistiek.
