From the Neolithic bone flutes discovered in the Jura caves in Germany, to the chiming flints and stone percussion of the Trois-Vèvres caves in France, it seems that music and sound have always been used for their extraordinary qualities. It is part of our cultural DNA to replicate sounds of nature, be it animal cries, thunder, or wind rustling through trees. Manipulating sound to let it speak to our imagination is a type of magic. Through that reconfiguration we can achieve changes in consciousness.

The Knight's Move series continues with a lecture by Drew Mulholland, Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society with the Institute of British Geographers. Mulholland specialises in sound and psychogeography and was as such connected to the University of Glasgow.

As a composer and researcher Mulholland's field is to interpret the environment and the moods, behaviours and memories it evokes. He uses music and sound as a meditation on the nature of landscape and memory. He focuses his research on how sound can affect psychological change, and subsequently harness this influence to provoke psychological reactions in the listener. When manipulated this reconfiguration of sound can trigger subconscious involuntary memory, temporal anomalies, and a new awareness of connections.

Sound isn't just for the ears.
Drew Mulholland will show us the full extent of its magic.

The Knight's Move
The Knight's Move is a series of lectures by eminent international speakers who stand out by their unusual, enlightening and inspirational visions concerning the city, urbanity, the public domain, and community. Just as the knight moves in an atypical and unusual way across the chessboard, The Knight's Move likewise wants to cut across all disciplines and thus stimulate rethinking the city.

The Knight's Move is an initiative by Stroom Den Haag and currently organized in collaboration with The Hague International Center for Civic Hacks, het Nationale Toneel & Babel and LAPS Amsterdam and made possible in part by the Haagse Bluf Fonds (via Prins Bernard Cultuurfonds) and The City of The Hague.
