Sissel Tolaas: Smelling Your Way Through The City

How does a city smell? What is the smell of fear? The New York Times once called Scandinavian artist Sissel Tolaas , 'the fragrance industry's most controversial figure'. Tolaas will talk about smell research and her practice as scent curator and odor artist.

Sissel Tolaas' exhibitions have been deliberately controversial. In a show at the Foundation Cartier in Paris, she simulated the smell of the city by capturing the aroma of ashtrays and slaughterhouses. With her 2006 exhibit the FEAR of Smell — the Smell of FEAR at MIT's Visual Arts Center, she synthetically rendered the smells of men prone to acute, chronic fear, creating special "scratch & sniff" panels that visitors could touch to release the respective odours.

'Sissel Tolaas, an odor artist and perhaps the fragrance industry's most controversial figure, pushes across her desk a small glass bottle containing pale liquid. I inhale, and then, phew! If my nose is to be trusted, a male armpit has unfurled, only inches away. And it's perspiring heavily. This isn't real sweat, but a sophisticated mimesis. It was designed at the research laboratory that Tolaas leads in Berlin, an outpost of International Flavors and Fragrances Inc.'

The Knight's Move
Survey lectures season 2013-2014
The Knight's Move is a series of lectures by eminent international speakers who stand out by their unusual, enlightening and inspirational visions concerning the city, urbanity, the public domain, and community. Just as the knight moves in an atypical and unusual way across the chessboard, Stroom Den Haag likewise wants to cut across all disciplines and thus stimulate rethinking the city.

Media partner of The Knight's Move 2013-2014 is The Pop-Up City.

The Knight's Move lectures are made possible in part by the Creative Industries Fund NL and the Haagse Bluf Fonds.
