Ondertussen: Gosse de Kort

22 June thru 21 August 2011
Location: Hogewal 1-9, The Hague

Gosse de Kort was invited by Scheltema in Leiden (NL) to develop the project 'Score', an installation researching the relationship between the architectural environment and musical space.

The term 'score' refers to the English word for musical notation. In a traditional stave the notes are in a fixed position; time moves across the page from left to right. In interpreting this notation the musician adds a specific timing based on the length and sequence of the notes: this requires a coördination between his or her physical and mental powers.

In the installation 'Score' this principle takes on a mechanical form; timing and touch are made visible through light and movement. In the space sixteen white bulbs stand in a circle of six meters in diameter. Each bulb contains a speaker, a light sensor and a light source. In the center of the circle there is a rotating beam of light generated by a computer. When the light source illuminates one of the bulbs, the bulb in question produces a sound. By making the light source rotate faster or slower, more complex and varied rhythms can be produced. The intensity of the light determines the loudness of the sound. By means of the light sources in the bulbs themselves a certain note can be held; thus chords can be created in space.

For 'Score' the composers Paul Koek and Ton van der van der Meer wrote the composition 'Ruhelos!', that was performed in 2010. In the future artists from a variety of disciplines will be invited to write a score for the installation; for example an architect, a choreographer and a visual artist.

For the Score Project Gosse de Kort received a Stroom PRO Art Projects Subsidy.

Ondertussen
The former reception area of Stroom has been converted into a small exhibition space. On a regular basis there are presentations of artists who have received a subsidy in the categories Stroom PRO- and SPOT-grants. The informal exhibitions and presentations are intended to illustrate the diversity of the Stroom grant system. The program in the space is called Ondertussen (Meanwhile).
