Earlier this year Pulchri Studio in The Hague presented the exhibition Synecdoche City (16 February - 9 March 2013), a collaborative project by Ejderkan A. Tastekin and Jan Wattjes, two artists from The Hague who work in completely different disciplines. Jan Wattjes is a painter who creates mostly figurative work that refers to the history of painting. Ejderkan A. Tastekin makes abstract and spatial work with architectural connotations, in which light plays a major role.

Synecdoche City was the first collaborative exhibition of Tastekin and Wattjes. In two classic exhibition spaces of Pulchri Studio they created an architectural environment consisting of geometric objects, occupying the space in a random and asymmetrical order. The objects invited the visitors to explore the space and also served as carriers for new and existing work of the two artists.

With the installation Ejderkan A. Tastekin and Jan Wattjes did not aspire to actually recreate a city, but wanted to zoom in on the idea of a city and its characteristics. Synecdoche City presented the visitor with a city-like environment referring to concepts like anonimity, volatility, finding your way in a labyrinth of streets and spatial volumes. The project enabled Tastekin and Wattjes to examine the way in which their work functions in this specific context and in relation to each other. In addition it presented them with the opportunity to break free from their daily routines and the restrictions of their specific disciplines.

In 2012 both Ejderkan A. Tastekin and Jan Wattjes received a Stroom Invest subsidy. For both artists the collaborative project Synecdoche City was part of their proposal.

Ondertussen
The former reception area of Stroom has been converted into a small exhibition space. On a regular basis there are presentations of artists who have received a subsidy in the categories Stroom PRO- and SPOT-grants. The informal exhibitions and presentations are intended to illustrate the diversity of the Stroom grant system. The program in the space is called Ondertussen (the Dutch word for 'meanwhile').
