In 2012 Aliki van der Kruijs (1984) received her Master's degree in Applied Arts from the Dirty Art Department of the Sandberg Instituut in Amsterdam. During her studies, she used her background as a graphic designer, photographer and fashion designer to do research into the way textile can be a means of communication and a meaningful framework to highlight the relationship between man and nature.

She uses contextual research to arrive at a variety of results. Rain, the sun, heat or salt are image-forming elements in her work. The contextualization of a technique, a craft or a methodology is at the heart of the work. Various projects in her portfolio were developed on - or inspired by - a specific location. Her working method is experimental and she often uses nature as a ‘tool' to edit materials and generate meaning.

Recently she started viewing her role more as the director of the process or the materials, rather than as the creator of the work. She sets the parameters within which a process can take place. For her textile work Made by Rain, for example, she developed a technique that makes it possible to capture rain patterns on textiles. She uses fabrics in a photographic way to document the rain, and to provide insight into the reality of climate change.

For her OpZicht presentation Aliki invited the architect Anne Dessing to start a dialogue about the spatial presentation of experiments with materials from Aliki's archive. Anne Dessing explores her discipline through a variety of media, to create space to think freely and give meaning to architecture as an applied art.
This conversation led to The Curtain Show, a performance by the materials Cotton, Wood, Calcium hexacyanoferrate (III), Ammonium iron (III) citrate, UV and Time, that will develop during the run of the exhibition.

The players are seven curtains that will be prepared with cyanotype, a light sensitive emulsion, and will be exposed to UV light. By draping the curtains in a different way, a variety of imprints will become visible. After the fixation process, the various drapes will form one curtain for the OpZicht podium.
