During this Stadsklas we learn to see the value of waste disposal. We look at different ways how trash expresses and gives meaning to our daily living circumstances. And we will learn how trash contributes to different forms of urban development and planning. The travel starts in the former setting of swimming paradise Tropicana Rotterdam, a laboratory of innovative entrepreneurship, and debouches via bunkered silt deposits, recreation and nature parks at the seashore. By means of bike, boat, metro, and train along river Meuse we will accomplish the travel.

This Stadsklas explores how former landfills of different kinds of waste - from garbage and waste (debris) to chemicals and dredging- have transformed into complete different, new types of landscapes and urban environments. We will visit the eldest Protest woods of the Netherlands, make the acquaintance of the home of pine marten, experience idyllic primordial nature and come across wander paths. As we follow the Meuse and the New Waterway, the scale of the waste landscape enlarges and becomes fierce. The land tongue of Rozenburg and the National ‘forgotten pit' of the C2 landfill on the Maasvlakte are some of the highlights of this memorable exploration along modern and often unintended landscapes.

About the guides

Hans Jungerius is an explorer of undefined, hidden stories behind the ways we plan and use our world. He takes the participants along improper used places along the river, and through forms of ‘hard looking' aiming to show the different ways of how we make/ create (future) history.

Floris Schiferli - superuse-studios.com - is urban planner and partner of Superuse Studios, a design studio that makes optimal use of locally sourced 'waste' in new design solutions. He is one of the initiators of Tropicana BlueCity010.

Duzan Doepel is architect of among others HAKA Recycle Office and the Green Machine (Tarwewijk) Rotterdam.

This edition of the Stadsklas is organised with the Rotterdam Academy of Architecture (RAvB) / Lectureship Future Urban Regions (FUR) and takes place in the thematic context of the curriculum ‘waste as resource' (FUR /RAvB & INSIDE KABK The Hague).

About the Stadsklas
The Stadsklas is an unorthodox ‘learning by doing' program of innovative urban planning, while at the same time functioning as an action research model, which mobilises a process of collective learning to delineate new roles and skills emerging within the changing field of urban planning. Stadsklas is an initiative of Stroom Den Haag in collaboration with Willemijn Lofvers, Hans Venhuizen and Tim Devos. The Creative Industries Fund supports the program.
