The Legal Event focuses on the question: can a sculpture constitute a legally binding body-donation bequest to the arts? This research method of the artists Christine Borland and Brody Condon consists of a public discussion with legal experts and a presentation of experiments in the setting of a 18th century parlour.

Speakers:
Daniel McClean, is a lawyer specialising in art and cultural property law and a curator of contemporary art;
Jonathan Price, PhD Fellow and Lecturer at the Institute for the Interdisciplinary Study of the Law, Leiden University, where he researches concepts of human personhood in law and culture;
Peter Pels, Professor in Anthropology at the University of Leiden. He is currently finishing a book on material culture, religion and the power of objects, and coordinates research into modern conceptions of the future, museums, and heritage;
Mr Frank Mutter, legal advisor, speaker and columnist on Dutch funeral law.

In addition there will be fall experiments conducted with the help of the participants, after the historic experiment publicly demonstrated by Professor Willem 's Gravesande in 1722. For these experiments the clay of the Clay Event and the blooms of the Iron Bloom event will be used.

With the exhibition Circles of Focus: The Fall Experiment at Stroom Den Haag, Christine Borland and Brody Condon present the latest results of their ongoing research project, which explores the donated human body as an agent for artistic research and practice. The artists' residency and exhibition focuses on the question: can a sculpture constitute a legally binding body-donation bequest?

In the weeks before the opening of the exhibition on 15 October the artist will have a residency period at Stroom Den Haag. Through a series of public events they will collect the materials they will use for the sculptures in the exhibition. You are cordially invited to join us for one or all of these events.

Circles of Focus: The Fall Experiment is made possible through the financial support of the Mondriaan Fund and the city of The Hague.
